Slater & Son Design-Build Contractors Bidwell PresbyterianNon-traditional Approach in Historic Renovation
Bidwell Presbyterian Church

Summary
A historic landmark in Chico, California, was in the initial planning stages of a lengthy remodel. However, with an architect already selected, Slater & Son’s traditional design-build process needed to shift dramatically.

Challenge
Several years ago, it was agreed that major renovations were necessary for Chico’s historic Bidwell Presbyterian Church. However, the age of the building, its history and its condition demanded a considered, precise and delicate remodeling touch to preserve the historic integrity on the exterior and interior and make way for the next century of fellowship.

The Bidwell Presbyterian Church Board of Elders had already engaged an architect. In an uncommon move, Slater & Son was asked to present a bid to work alongside the hired architect in a “design-assist” fashion.

Solution
Rather than insisting on their traditional design-build formula, Slater & Son showed a sense of flexibility in their business model. They reciprocated the same trust in the architect that the Board of Directors had afforded them. After all, most projects require a unique approach and a fresh perspective. Given the historical importance of Bidwell Presbyterian Church to the community and the congregation, this was no exception.

Conclusion
In some cases, a design-assist effort is not successful due to the competing visions and shared responsibilities/decision-making. Slater & Son agreed to the job because the architect involved had a vast knowledge of both historic architecture and this particular building. And because they could complete the rest of the build team on their own, Slater & Son moved forward to assist cooperatively and complete each stage successfully.
